Dwight Fagbamila graduated from the AKV St. Joost Film School in 2016. After his graduation, he directed the critically highly acclaimed short film Babatunde. Femi is Dwight’s feature film debut, with a high concept genre thriller already in preparation as his follow-up.
Who we are, where we come from and go to, these are philosophical questions without an ever satisfying explanation. But simplified, broken down to only relate to ourselves, these questions are a lot easier to answer.
I was always interested in the role of origin, family history, and the impact our parents have on us. As son of a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, I know too well what it is like to grow up between two cultures and the feeling that I don't really belong anywhere - a poignant contradiction that forms the core of the problem of the main character in Femi.
Femi creates a bridge between social and magical realism. It is a story about a boy fighting a battle with his demons. To him, suicide is the only way to beat them. In addition to a gripping character study, I wanted to give the audience an emotional experience, recognizable and encouraging for anyone who has had that struggle before.
Yannick Jozefzoon is a Dutch actor and presenter who can also be seen in the director’s short film debut BABATUNDE. Besides his work for TV (starring in television series like Amsterdam Vice and Dare), Yannick also appeared in big screen thriller Boy 7 and sci-fi adventure Captain Nova.
Joy Verberk is a Dutch actress best known for her role as Nicole in the critically acclaimed drama Son of Mine and the feature Avondland as well as for working on TV series Doodstill.
